Rosa Parks Campout FAQ

Yes, folks, it's time (again) for the Fall Campout.  For those of you who witnessed the majesty that comes of watching your children get dirty in places they won't wash for a month, you know what to expect.  For newbies, read on.

WHERE IS THE CAMP LOCATED?
The Campout will be at Huddart County Park. 11000 Kings Mountain Road. Woodside, CA. It is about an hour's drive from Berkeley/Oakland.  Parking is $10.00 per vehicle and is not included in the price of the campout.

WHAT ARE THE DATES?
5:00pm October 7th -- 12:00 noon October 9th.

HOW MANY PEOPLE DOES THE CAMPSITE HOLD?
We are limited to 100 persons, including staffers. We will accept registrations on a first-come / first-served basis. You must be paid to have a reservation.

I'VE NEVER BEEN CAMPING BEFORE. SHOULD I MAKE THIS MY FIRST TRIP?
Why not!

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Pay what you can.  The cost is on a sliding scale, but those who can we ask that they pay $60.00 per person for the weekend.  That includes wine and cheese each evening, your dinner on Friday, three meals Saturday, and breakfast on Sunday, as well as beverages, including wine and beer.  If you'd like to come but can only afford to pay a little, or none at all, no worries:  complete and submit your registration form and come anyways.  And the best part is, you don't have to cook.

NO COOKING? WOW, WHAT'S ON THE MENU?
This summer's menu included Hatch green chile, a mixed grill of chipotle marinated beef and lime chicken, stir-fried vegetables in the world's largest wok, an oatmeal bar, chocolate fondue.  Not to be outdone, we'll also cook up some fancy vittles.

Friday you will arrive to wine and cheese, followed by a barbeque with chicken, beef, and vegan specialties for  dinner and (of course) s'mores for all!

Saturday morning by popular demand, we'll bring back the oatmeal bar, with lots of fresh fruit, strong coffee, hot cocoa, hot and cold cereal. Then, we'll set out a spread so you can build your own lunch for eating at the park, or for packing to one of the nearby sites you can visit.

Saturday evening, return to a chili cookout with lots of corn bread, salad, and southwest fixins.  Dessert is a special surprise, but we promise it will match last summer's chocolate fondue.  Sunday morning, you can grab cold cereal if you're in a hurry; otherwise, we'll whip up something warm to start your morning.

DO I HAVE TO BRING ANY FOOD?
Not if you don't want to, but if you want to snack between meals, or feel like doing your own thing at your campsite, feel free to bring something for yourself.  Between meals, there will always be fresh fruit and water, but if you're a snacker, that might not be enough.  We don't want to harsh your mellow, but we regret we cannot give you use of the main kitchen (not even for a quick cup of tea or to boil an egg), so if you think you'll want more food, you may wish to consider bringing a camp stove for your site.

You will be responsible for bringing your own plate/bowl/cup and utensils for each meal, and for washing them yourself.

HOW DO I RESERVE FOR MY FAMILY?
Three Ways:
1. Complete the form you were provided.  Then, bring your check for $60.00 (or what you can pay) for each person who will attend the campout to the Office at Rosa Parks (make sure to include an email address at which we can send you updates/details); or
2.  Mail the above information to Dan Abrahamson, 918 Parker Street, Bldg A21, Berkeley, CA 94710; or.
3. Use PayPal: Make your payment to Daniel Abrahamson and use the "comments" section to write the names of the people who will attend (and an email address).

WHAT ABOUT CAMPING EQUIPMENT?
Please bring the usual camping equipment you would need, such as tents, sleeping bags, bug repellant, etc.  There are no showers at Huddart Park.   If you've never been camping before, we'll send you a list. Email Dan at mailto:dan@abrahamsonfamily.com.

I HAVE LITTLE CHILDREN WHO DON'T EAT MUCH. DO I STILL HAVE TO PAY THE FULL AMOUNT?
The County Parks Department counts everyone -- including babies -- as a person, so we do too.

I HAVE KIDS WHO GRAZE ALL DAY.  CAN YOU MAKE AN ACCOMMODATION FOR US SO THAT WE CAN EAT THROUGHOUT THE DAY?
The campsites allow personal cook stoves, which you are welcome to bring and whip up your own snacks at any time.  We also are unable to babysit your children, or watch them if they wake up early.

I HAVE SPECIAL DIETARY NEEDS. IS THIS THE TRIP FOR ME?
Possibly, but maybe not. We will make available a meat and vegan option at each meal, but may not be able to accommodate most special needs.

DOES EVERYONE HAVE TO BE A ROSA PARKS FAMILY?
Not at all. Whomever you'd like to bring, we encourage you to camp with people you'd like to share the experience with, and that includes families who may not be part of our school family.  The key is registering soon, before spaces fill up.  Check this blogsite for status on the number of spaces left.

I WANT TO COME WITH A CROWD. HOW DO I RESERVE FOR MORE THAN JUST MY FAMILY?
By submitting the registration fee for each person who you will bring.

IS THERE AN AGENDA?
No, but events have a way of popping up. Camping is about discovering new things in an unscripted way. The meals will be served at predictable intervals (8am breakfast, bag lunch, 5pm dinner), but most of the time, you will be free to do what you like with family and friends. Huddert Park information can be found by clicking here. In addition, you can take the day to visit Memorial Park, Harley Farms (a working Goat Farm), the bird sanctuary, and Pescadero Beach during the day, all just a few minutes' drive from the park.

IS THERE CHILDCARE?
No. Your children will be your responsibility while you are at the Campout, and we ask that you keep them from the kitchen area as there are sharp knives, hot surfaces, and propane around.

CAN I HELP WITH SOMETHING?
We'd love some help. As always, we'll need a Dark Lord of O'Dark Thirty to help with coffee.  We'll require the dulcet tones of one or more pied pipers.  And we're always up for a sommelier and bar back.
Please email your special talent to mailto:dan@abrahamsonfamily.com and we will coordinate with you.

ANY TIPS FROM THE LAST CAMPOUT?
  • MUSIC. We had lots of singing and music.  Feel free to bring musical instruments if you like, to the campfire.
  • BEACH. Many people spent Saturday at the Beach in Pescadero. It gets windy and the surf can be rough.  Pack a jacket!
  • GROCERIES. There is a full service supermarket 15 minutes from the camp if you need anything from diapers to dramamine.
  •  CAMPING STUFF. If you forget something, there are several big box stores about 25 minutes from the camp.
  • DISHES. Camp dishes look alike.  Consider labeling yours. Sharpies, tape, etc.
  • FLASHLIGHTS. Don't forget to bring them.
  • DISHWASHING.  Some people had some challenges cleaning up after themselves.  If you think this might be a challenge, you may wish to purchase biodegradable plates, because leaving dirty plates around brings unwanted four-legged evening visitors.

WHAT IF I HAVE MORE QUESTIONS?
Feel free to email mailto:dan@abrahamsonfamily.com for additional questions.

LET'S DO IT AGAIN

Thanks to Javier and many others who pushed for a Fall Event, we've managed to wrangle the Huddart Campsite for this Fall (2011), so you won't have to wait until 2012 to get your camp on!

Under the old saying "if it ain't broke, make it better", we're making a few changes to the trip, but we're hoping to keep the good stuff. Stay tuned for more information, but here are some highlights:

SPONSORSHIPS
Many of you asked whether you could contribute additional funds so that others could come to the event. The answer is YES! The signup sheet will have sponsorship opportunities. You can sponsor a person, a family, or some special element of the trip (like the campfire s'mores).

We'll also have "goodies" that you can purchase as fundraising opportunities, like the official Rosa Parks Camp Cookbook.

EXPANDED ATTENDANCE
Some of you thought it would be nice to have more people in attendance. Welp, we can accommodate 100 this Fall!

SNACKS
Can't wait until dinner? We'll have snacks out (like popcorn, fruit, and chips) throughout the day just in case your munchkin's require munchin'.

VOLUNTEERS
Want to sign up for a job? We'd love your help. This trip, we'll have pre-event volunteers as well as a duty roster for those that want to help "just-a-little".

MORE PLAY FUN
We're hoping to get an activity coach for those people who just want to stay around camp and have fun.

More to come! Thanks for making this the best trip ever.

WOW!

What a great weekend. Good families. Good fun. Good fun. Thanks to everyone for making it a tremendous success. It was truly a community event. We hope everyone has as good a time as we (Tsan and Dan) did.

Too many people to thank, but a quick special thanks to the tireless troopers who really pitched in:

WICK: Morning warrior and pied piper of song.
JAMEY: Our very own Fire Marshall Bill and ace photographer
MARIA: President of O'dark Thirty who kept people buzzed
ALEX: AKA Mowgli, the water boy.
CARRIE: JACK(IE) of all trades, from stir-fry to

Thanks, too, for all the great feedback. Next year's campout will be all the better for it.

In the coming weeks, we'll have more on the site, including photographs and comments. "til then, enjoy the summer.

CAMPOUT'S JUST AROUND THE CORNER... SOME THINGS TO REMEMBER

HI FOLKS!

The weekend's just around the corner. We're excited for a great camping experience. Please review the site if you have questions -- you may find the answers here. If not, feel free to contact Tsan or Dan at their email addresses:

dan@abrahamsonfamily.com
tsan@abrahamsonfamily.com

Some things to remember:

Camp Opens at 3pm. Feel free to arrive any time after that. There will be cooks there by the time you arrive. We'll set out wine, cheese, beer, and lemonade around 4pm.

Dinner is from 5:30-7:30pm, to give the cooks time to clean before it gets dark. If you have to come in late, which is fine, you may want to stop at the store in Woodside and pick up some food.

Breakfast will be served beginning at 8:00am. We'll try to have coffee and juice ready by 7:30. We'll stop serving at 10am.

Lunch is a do-it-yourself bar that will be set up at 10:30am. We'll take it down at 11:30. No lunch will be served at the site, although you are welcome to eat the bag lunch you've made at the site.

The Group Site is for "sharing" so you will have other people in fairly close proximity. The Group Site is divided into three or four separate areas, so if you come with a gaggle of families, you may be able to camp together, but know that no single family will have its own site.

You will be responsible for bringing your dishes. We will not have paper products on hand for you. Please remember to bring utensils, bowls, plates, and cups, and whatever else you will need. If you choose, you may bring paper products.

You will be responsible for washing your dishes. There will be a spigot and cold water and buckets for washing and rinsing. If you want to heat water, please bring a campstove for yourself. We'll have some water, but because we have the big dishes to clean, we cannot heat water for the camp for cleaning (only for tea and hot chocolate).

The fire department is issuing no fire permits. Sadly, the Fire Department has said it's too dry for a campfire. Remember to bring warm clothes and lots of hugs, since that's the only way to stay warm.

VOLUNTEERS

LOOKING FOR THE FAQ? CLICK HERE. OTHERWISE, READ ON:

We're excited to make this the best first annual camping trip ever. Food is already in the prepping stages, beer is in the fermenting tanks, and we're scouting out volunteers to help make things even better:

(1) PRESIDENT OF MUSICOLOGY (GUITARIST)
If you'd like to volunteer to lead the campfire hootenanny, please let us know. We can get along without a guitar, but it sure would be nice to have someone who can play more than one chord (tsan). The successful applicant will know (or be able to fake): "Down by the Bay," "She'll be comin' round the mountain", "Hand Jive" and other camp favorites.

(2) FIRE MASTER
The fire department has fairly strict rules about fires at the park. We have applied for our permit for a campfire, and we'd like someone to volunteer to make the morning and evening fires and maintain control over it (no kids, even if your kid has taken a fire safety course... sorry).

(3) MINISTER OF SANITATION
Although each family is responsible for cleaning their own dishes, we'd like someone to be responsible for setting up the cleaning station by the water source. We'll supply you with soap, sponges, signs ("scrape your plate here") and buckets; you help people figure it out.

(4) PRESIDENT OF O-DARK-THIRTY
We'll be up early to get things started for breakfast, the most important of which for most parents will be hot steaming coffee. Care to join us at (gulp) 5:30? If so, you'll be responsible for drip coffee making, including heatin' that water (We'll supply the ingredients, your sole job will be to be awake enough to pour water into drip cones).

Let us know:

Rosa Parks Update!

LOOKING FOR THE F.A.Q. CLICK HERE and check out the basics.

We're 1/2 full, so if you're planning to camp with your friends and family, get those ressies in! WE'RE GOING TO BE SOLD OUT FOR SURE.

As we get close to the big camping day, here's some things you should know:

(1) It's COLD. June is not typically warm in the Woodside area of California and even if we get lucky, the sun also sets. Make sure you are planning for cold nights. While there will be a campfire at the group eating area, your sleeping quarters will not have a place for you to make a fire. Remember to bring lots of warm clothing to layer.

(2) Plan to share. Group camping means about 10 people per site. The sites are quite large and because you will not need to set up a cooking station, you will have plenty of room. If you're planning to come with multiple families, it may behoove you to coordinate times to arrive.

(3) Bring recreation equipment. If you (or your kids) are not hikers, there's plenty to do at the park: Volleyball courts and lots of flat area are available for you to play frisbee, ball, or other games. Since your Saturday lunch will be a bag lunch that you can take with you, there's no need to be back at the campsite midday. If you'd like to take a drive to Pescadero (about an hour), or the Goat Farm (45 minutes), you can also leave the campsite. There is also an equestrian facility where you can rent horses, but you must call ahead of time.

ROSA PARKS CAMPOUT FAQ

WHERE IS THE CAMP LOCATED?
The Campout will be at Huddart County Park. 11000 Kings Mountain Road. Woodside, CA. It is about an hour's drive from Berkeley.

I'VE NEVER BEEN CAMPING BEFORE. SHOULD I MAKE THIS MY FIRST TRIP?
Why not!

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The cost is $50.00 per person for the weekend and it includes your dinner on Friday, three meals Saturday, and breakfast on Sunday.

NO COOKING? WOW, WHAT'S ON THE MENU?
This is not your average wienie roast! Our goal is to make this a gourmet camping experience. Friday you will arrive to wine and cheese, followed by a light southwest inspired dinner and (of course) s'mores for all! Saturday morning you'll have hot and cold breakfast options, including fresh fruit, strong coffee, hot cocoa, hot and cold cereal. Then, we'll set out a spread so you can build your own lunch for eating at the park, or for packing to one of the nearby sites you can visit. Saturday evening, return to a fabulous mixed grill will all the fixins, including chocolate fondue for dessert. Sunday morning, we'll surprise you with something hot from the griddle.

DO I HAVE TO BRING ANY FOOD?
Not if you don't want to. You will be responsible for bringing your own plate/bowl/cup and utensils for each meal, and for washing them yourself. Your meals, however, will be provided.

HOW DO I RESERVE FOR MY FAMILY?
Three Ways:
1. Bring your check for $50.00 for each person who will attend the campout to the Office at Rosa Parks, along with the names of each person attending, and an email address at which we can mail you details.

(exclusive of camp stoves). If you've never been camping before, we'll send you a list. Email Dan at mailto:dan@abrahamsonfamily.com. Or check back here. We'll post a list.

I HAVE LITTLE CHILDREN WHO DON'T EAT MUCH. DO I STILL HAVE TO PAY THE FULL AMOUNT?
The County Parks Department counts everyone -- including babies -- as a person. Because this is a Rosa Parks Fundraiser and we are limited to 50 people, we must charge everyone, regardless of how much, or what, they eat.

I HAVE SPECIAL DIETARY NEEDS. IS THIS THE TRIP FOR ME?
Possibly, but maybe not. We will make available a meat and vegetarian option at each meal, but will not be able to accommodate most special needs (like vegan eaters, dairy and gluten-free eaters). Moreover, we regret we cannot "share" our cooking area due to the number of people we have to feed.

I CAN ONLY COME FOR ONE NIGHT, OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON, CAN I GET A REDUCED FEE?
You are welcome to come for a time shorter than the full weekend, but we cannot reduce your fee or refund any moneys you pay if you leave early.

DOES EVERYONE HAVE TO BE A ROSA PARKS FAMILY?
Not at all. We encourage you to camp with people you'd like to share the experience with, and that includes families who may not be part of our school family.

I WANT TO COME WITH A CROWD. HOW DO I RESERVE FOR MORE THAN JUST MY FAMILY?
By submitting the registration fee for each person who you will bring.

No. Your children will be your responsibility while you are at the Campout.

CAN I HELP WITH SOMETHING?
We'd love some help. If you can commit to doing something (be it working the griddle, playing camp songs on your guitar, or helping with the set up), please email your special talent to mailto:dan@abrahamsonfamily.com and we will coordinate with you.

WILL THERE BE ANY MORE INFORMATION FORTHCOMING?
Yes. We will update this blog with additional posts and we will also email each of your who signed up with more detailed information.

WHAT IF I HAVE MORE QUESTIONS?
Feel free to email mailto:dan@abrahamsonfamily.com for additional questions.
